Will Goodwin of The Goodwin Brothers Honored as The Josie Music Awards Bluegrass Vocalist of the Year at The Grand Ole Opry

The 10th Annual Josie Music Awards were held in Nashville at the Grand Ole Opry on October 27, 2024. The Josie Music Awards are the largest, most respected, revered award and prestigious events and association in the independent music industry. Their theme is "Chase Your Dreams - Be a Part of Something Big.

Lexington, KY's Will Goodwin was named Bluegrass Vocalist of the Year while his brother Jonathan took Christian/ Gospel/ Inspirational Vocalist of the Year honors. With last year's Chase Bush win for Vocalist of the Year - this makes wins for all three of The Goodwin Brothers front vocal line!

Kentucky's presence in the circle on the Grand Ole Opry stage was frequent, heartfelt and definitely "something big" for all who had the opportunity to stand on the sacred and highly revered space to accept their award. Let's break it all down to just how BIG that was for Kentucky last Sunday night.

Pictured from left to right: Top Row - Darrell Pittman, Andrew Moore, Haleigh Martin, Hailey Newman, Renee and Warren Cobb. 2nd Row- JD Shelburne, Brando Vanschoyck, Joe Clark and Taylor Hughes. 3rd Row - Melissa Deaton, Danny and Natalie Micoff, Kid Kentucky - Don Suiters, Will Goodwin and Jonathan Goodwin.

"I am so thankful to have been selected at the prestigious Josie Music Awards as the Bluegrass Vocalist of the Year, especially in a category not traditionally known as one that enjoys more conventional or "classical" singers. My brothers and I have been celebrated and recognized far more than we deserve in an unfathomably deep and divers talent pool, where our peers are constantly pushing the envelop to keep growing this incredible genre of music. We will keep doing our best to contribute to that vision and hope people will enjoy our music for years to come!" - Will Goodwin

In addition to Will's win at The 10th Annual Josie Music Awards, Will's brother, Jonathan, won Vocalist of the Year Honors in the Gospel/ Christian/ Inspirational Category, we dig more into the history of The Goodwin Brothers and we find that this isn’t Will’s first rodeo either. Earlier in 2024, Will found his name in the very prestigous list of only four nominees for Vocalist of the Year (all genres) for the Hollywood Independent Music Awards and as a winner for Bluegrass Band of the Year as a member of The Goodwin Brothers.

Two years ago, in 2022, The Goodwin Brothers were selected as one of eight performers at The 8th Annual Josie Music Awards at The Grand Ole Opry and also won Bluegrass Band of the Year honors. This performance of their original song "Barefoot Girl" showcased the versatility and exceptional stage presence of Will Goodwin singing lead and playing mandolin.

After serving in the Kentucky National Guard out of high school, he then attended Morehead State University where he became a vocal-major and was an often featured soloist with the MSU Black-Gospel Ensemble (Talk about diversity and being able to adapt). He graduated in 2013 with a degree in Political Science and then began traveling as the lead singer of the, then popular, Christian music band (ASSEMBLED).

Their projects were produced by his older brother, Jonathan, and within that ensemble, they garnered multiple awards within the gospel music community. Not sure about their current live shows, but on this project, William is the featured lead singer on 80% of the songs and the shoe certainly fits. He also plays mandolin for the group.

In 2023, Overtones LIVE and Listen Locally commissioned this musical work of art from the great craftsmanship and artistry of Dennis Gugin's Custom Funko Pop Culture Collectible Vinyl Figures to commemorate a wonderful year “working in concert” with The Goodwin Brothers while honoring their October Grand Ole Opry appearance at The Josie Music Awards being named 2022 “Bluegrass Band of the Year” and “Bluegrass Song of the Year” in 2023.

Since 2019, Warren Cobb and I have worked with Dennis in capturing a special memory from that year in a magnificent way. In the past - you have most likely seen his work represented in the custom action figures of Overtones LIVE, Greg Austin - both musicians and Auburn Basketball Player and Sarah Beth Terry. We have also enjoyed seeing his custom designed pop culture figures of Sturgill Simpson, Brad Hardin, Tyler Childers, Bobby LeVasseur of Boston's Way and Jim Cundiff of Off the Trail Photography action figures commissioned by others.
